How Many Years Did Boaz Live?

AA

Question

I would like to understand regarding the Book of Ruth:

Did Boaz live approximately 80 years?

Thank you very much in advance and all the best

Answer

Shalom Rav,

There are several opinions on this matter:

1. According to the Midrash (Ruth Rabbah, Chapter 6, Paragraph 2), Boaz was eighty years old when he married Ruth. Thus, on that very night of the wedding, he passed away, as Rashi wrote in Chronicles I (Chapter 2, Verse 11) in the name of Chazal. Therefore, it is found that he died at the age of eighty.

2. However, according to the Gemara in Baba Batra (Page 91, Column A), that Abzan is Boaz. Therefore, Boaz, who was born in the year 2489 of Creation, passed away at the end of his judgeship in the year 2792. Based on this, Boaz lived for 304 years. And see Rashi in Chronicles (there) that Boaz gave birth at 300 years of age. He wrote this according to the words of the Gemara that Abzan is Boaz.

3. In the Yalkut Shimoni (Parashat Vayechi, Entry 111), it is stated: Boaz, Obed, Yishai, our Rabbis said, lived longer than four hundred years.

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
