Natural Remedies for Head Lice: Do They Really Work?

Statistics clearly show that 75% of Israeli children have encountered lice at least once. So, how do you deal with them?

How do you handle your children’s lice problems? Do you reach for chemical treatments or prefer natural solutions? Experts in New York have noted that lice have been “raising their heads” more over the past year than before.

Adrian Pinckney, a specialist at the Lice Treatment Center in New York, says the problem affects more children than adults, particularly those between the ages of 3 and 11. In Israel, statistics show that 75% of children have contracted lice at least once in their lives.

So, what can be done to get rid of them? Many people rely on home remedies, such as applying mayonnaise, vinegar, or even olive oil to the scalp.

In the past, kerosene was used as a so-called miracle remedy, but it is no longer recommended, as it can cause skin burns and has even led to hospitalizations among children.

As for olive oil, there is no scientific proof that it is effective against lice. However, a medical center in Wisconsin recommends coating children’s hair with olive oil every four days.

Mayonnaise is also considered by some to be effective in killing lice. Experts suggest sleeping overnight with mayonnaise in the hair while wearing a shower cap.

A popular and widely recommended treatment involves using a fine-toothed lice comb. It is advised to comb for at least five minutes to remove lice from the scalp.

In this case, the hair should be shampooed and conditioned, then thoroughly combed with a lice comb.
