Are Your Scented Candles Harming Your Health?

Before lighting your favorite candle, learn about the hidden risks of paraffin wax and artificial fragrances and how to reduce potential harm.

Many of us enjoy lighting scented candles at home. They fill the room with fragrance, create a relaxing atmosphere, and help mask unpleasant odors. However, recent research suggests that some scented candles may pose risks to your health, particularly to the respiratory system and potentially the heart.

According to Dr. Tamás Pandics, a Hungarian physician, burning scented candles can trigger migraines, eye irritation, and may increase the risk of respiratory problems. The main concern lies in the particles emitted during burning, which can affect people prone to asthma or other lung conditions.

Paraffin Wax and Toxins
Most scented candles are made from paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum. When burned, paraffin can release harmful chemicals into the air, including substances that have been linked to cancer in laboratory studies.

A study at the University of South Carolina investigated the effects of burning petroleum-based versus plant-based candles. Candles were left burning for six hours inside a controlled environment, and the air quality was analyzed afterward. Researchers found that paraffin-based candles emitted potentially toxic chemicals that could contribute to cancer risk.

It is important to note, however, that while paraffin candles can release these substances, there is no definitive scientific proof that they cause cancer, and further research is needed.

Risks from Fragrances
Scented candles often contain artificial fragrances derived from petroleum and other chemicals. Over the past 50 years, studies have shown that up to 80 percent of these fragrances contain compounds such as acetone, phenol, and toluene. Inhaling these substances may place a burden on the liver and metabolic system, even if they are not directly carcinogenic.

Oil Candles Are Not Risk-Free
Some people switch to oil-based candles to avoid these issues. However, the oils and chemical additives in these candles can also pose risks. For example, cinnamon-scented oil candles may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or impact the nervous system.

Bottom Line
While scented candles can create a pleasant ambiance, it’s important to be aware of potential health risks. Choosing plant-based candles, limiting the duration they are burned, ensuring proper ventilation, and avoiding prolonged exposure can help reduce potential harm.
