Why Protein Is Important
Protein is essential for the body, particularly as we age. Dr. Susan J. Perry highlighted in a HuffPost interview that adequate protein intake is crucial for maintaining muscle mass, bone health, and overall vitality.
The general recommendation is about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Excessive intake, often exceeding 100 grams per day, can pose risks, especially when the protein comes mainly from animal sources like meat, eggs, and dairy.
The Risks of Animal Protein
High intake of animal protein has been linked to the accumulation of harmful compounds in the body. According to Dr. Monisha Bhanotta, a longevity expert, consuming large amounts of animal based foods can lead to the creation of damaging substances such as AGEs (advanced glycation end products) and TMAO (trimethylamine N oxide), which may accelerate aging.
AGEs form when proteins and fats combine with sugar in the body. Over time, they accumulate in tissues, causing chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and cholesterol buildup in arteries, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
TMAO has been associated with inflammation and heart disease, further highlighting the potential dangers of excessive animal protein consumption.
While protein is vital for overall health, consuming it in excess, particularly from animal sources, can accelerate aging and increase the risk of chronic diseases that may shorten life expectancy. Striking the right balance and including plant based protein sources can help you stay healthy and live longer.
