Peter Shankman is an author, speaker, and entrepreneur who lives with ADHD. He recently released a book on the topic that quickly became a bestseller. In it, Shankman shares his unconventional method for managing ADHD: instead of relying on medication, he turns to skydiving. With over 500 jumps under his belt, he claims the adrenaline rush floods his brain with the chemicals it typically lacks, keeping him highly focused for hours afterward. He is so dedicated that he sometimes brings his laptop to the drop zone to start working as soon as he is unhooked from his parachute.

While skydiving is not a practical solution for everyone with ADHD, Shankman’s broader advice offers valuable strategies for improving focus, productivity, and efficiency, useful for anyone, regardless of whether they have ADHD.

1. Create a Routine: A consistent schedule helps the brain stay organized and reduces confusion.

2. Limit Decisions: Even small choices, like what to wear, can drain energy. Simplify your life by reducing unnecessary decisions.

3. Prioritize Exercise: Physical activity is essential for a well functioning brain. Shankman even sleeps in his workout clothes and keeps his bike next to his bed to eliminate excuses.

4. Maintain a Healthy Diet: A protein rich diet supports brain function, while excessive sugars and empty carbs can worsen ADHD symptoms.

5. Allocate Time Wisely: Identify your goals and dedicate your time to the activities that will help you achieve them.

6. Know Your Limits: ADHD can drive extreme behaviors. For Shankman, this meant quitting alcohol because he could not stop at one drink and avoiding pizza because he could not eat just one slice. Recognize your personal challenges and manage them proactively.

Shankman’s approach reminds us that managing ADHD, or just staying focused in a busy world, requires creativity, self awareness, and strategies tailored to your own strengths and challenges. By adopting routines, prioritizing health, and understanding your limits, anyone can boost their focus, efficiency, and overall productivity.
