An individual struck by illness or born with a disability, whether physical or mental, often feels isolated from society and hindered in their service to Hashem due to these limitations. This feeling of despair is even stronger for someone who was once healthy and active in Torah and mitzvot, only to be suddenly afflicted, or for someone in old age, when health problems further limit their capabilities, casting a shadow over their once vibrant life.
Embracing Faith Amid Illness or Disability
Suffering can be eased for those who embrace the principles of faith. Faith provides comfort and guidance, yet even believers may struggle to accept these principles in every situation, finding their desires at odds with Hashem's will.
It is a mitzvah to understand that if Hashem places someone in a particular state, it is because He wants them to serve Him in that condition. Whether healthy or ill, wealthy or poor, one’s duty remains to serve Hashem within their current circumstances.
The Story of Rabbi Meir Feist: A Life of Faith
The book Pnei Meir recounts the life of Rabbi Meir Feist from the United States, who at age four suffered total paralysis in both legs, leaving him wheelchair-bound for life. Despite additional health challenges and the early loss of his parents, Rabbi Meir lived far beyond medical expectations, radiating joy and peace.
While others in his position might fall into misery or depression, Rabbi Meir was filled with happiness and contentment. His days, devoted to the joy of Torah, were considered more valuable than a thousand years of life without Torah. His life embodied the words of our Sages: "What shall a living person complain about," understanding that life itself, even without worldly pleasures, is of great value.
Lessons in Resilience and Faith
Holy writings teach that those who maintain joy and faith, even in adversity, serve as an example for everyone. Such individuals find happiness not in abundance or recognition, but in their unwavering trust in Hashem.
Complete Faith in Hashem
In the book 'Beit Avraham', it is taught that being wholehearted with Hashem means having full faith and reliance on Him, even when personal efforts seem unblessed or difficult. The key is to rejoice in every moment Hashem gives and to fulfill one’s duties with a happy heart. Those who live with this complete faith find joy in serving Hashem, knowing that life’s circumstances are just and that every opportunity to pray, bless, and do good is precious.
