This extraordinary passage is recited every day in the morning prayers, at the conclusion of Pesukei Dezimra. Our sages throughout the generations emphasize that reciting the Song of the Sea daily, with intention, joy, and vivid imagination of the miracle, is a powerful spiritual segulah (remedy).
The Zohar on the Power of Shirat HaYam
The holy Zohar teaches: “Anyone who recites the Song of the Sea every day and concentrates on it will merit to recite it in the World to Come, to rejoice in it during the days of King Mashiach, in the joy of the Congregation of Israel with the Holy One, blessed be He. Such a person is forgiven for all his sins, and the Holy One, blessed be He, saves him from all troubles that come upon the world.”
The Zohar further stresses that the song should be recited with great joy, just as it was sung the very first time at the sea. When it is said with that original joy, its spiritual power is renewed every single day, just as it was at the moment of the miracle.
Halachic Guidance: Reciting the Song with Joy
The Mishnah Berurah rules: “One should recite the Song of the Sea with joy, and imagine in his mind as though he himself crossed the sea that very day. One who recites it with joy is forgiven for his sins.”
Midrash Shemot Rabbah teaches that at the moment of the Splitting of the Red Sea, all the waters in the world split. The Maharash of Belz asks: Why was such a vast miracle necessary? Surely God does not perform miracles without purpose.
He explains that water symbolizes suffering and hardship, as King David says in Tehillim: “Save me, O God, for the waters have reached my soul.” When the sea split, all the waters of the world split, meaning that from that moment onward, humanity was given the spiritual power to break through all forms of suffering and hardship.
The Mahara of Belz teaches that in every generation, the miracles of the Red Sea are renewed. A person can merit to move from distress to relief in all areas of life — especially in matters likened by the sages to the Splitting of the Sea, such as finding a spouse, childbirth, and livelihood. Through Shirat HaYam, one can split through the “sea” of personal troubles and bring about salvation.
Prayer: The Key to One’s Personal Splitting of the Sea
To experience one’s own “Splitting of the Sea,” prayer is essential. The Rashbam writes regarding matters the sages describe as difficult like the Splitting of the Sea: “The practical implication is to pray for mercy.” One must increase heartfelt prayer and supplication to the Living God in order to draw down blessing and salvation.
Sefer Charedim explains the power of reciting the Song of the Sea with joy as a means of atonement for sins. Just as there are physical remedies — some painful and expensive, and others gentle yet effective, so too there are spiritual remedies for the soul. Some paths of repentance involve fasting and affliction, while others are segulot that bring atonement without suffering.
Among these special spiritual practices, the reciting Shirat HaYam with joy, as though one personally just left Egypt, serves as a powerful means through which all sins are forgiven.
The Sefer Charedim explains further, citing a Midrash on the verse “And Moshe caused them to journey”, which is interpreted as “he caused them to journey away from their sins.” When a person experiences a miracle and responds with song, their sins are forgiven.
The Beit Aharon writes: “The Song of the Sea contains everything — what was, what is, and what will be. All redemptions and all that a person needs are included within it. If one recites the Song of the Sea with full heart and devotion, each according to his level, all his matters, both physical and spiritual, will be repaired.”
