What Is The Kiddush, And What Is Its Purpose? 8 Explanations For The Holy Occasion
- The commandment to observe the Shabbat appears in the Ten Commandments with the words: "Remember the Sabbath day to sanctify it." Regarding this, our Sages explained: "Remember it over wine upon its entrance" – on Friday night.
- In the Kiddush, we mention the sanctity of the day through speech. In it, we testify to the creation of the world with the words: "And the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their host. And on the seventh day God finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it; because that in it He rested from all His work which God in creating had made."

- When a person stands by his household and sanctifies over the wine on Friday night, he thereby testifies before the nation and the world that he believes in the principles of Judaism, that there is a Creator of the world, that no detail in creation was created on its own, and there is no randomness in the world; rather, all of creation is included in the actions of Hashem, He Who is the Maker of the Work of Creation.
- Another reason for remembering the Shabbat day is mentioned in the text of the Kiddush with the words: "A remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt." The Shabbat commemorates the story of the Exodus from Egypt, the departure from slavery to freedom.
- Before performing the Kiddush, it is forbidden to eat and drink, meaning from the moment one accepts upon himself the sanctity of the Shabbat, and no later than a few minutes before sunset.
- Why is the creation of the world mentioned specifically on the Shabbat day? Because on this day, Hashem rested from His work.
- Our Sages instituted performing Kiddush in the morning of Shabbat as well. In this Kiddush too, one recites the blessing "Borei Peri HaGafen" over a cup of wine. It begins first with verses testifying to the giving of the Shabbat to Israel, "Veshamru," and subsequently, some add verses regarding the commandment to remember the Shabbat. This Kiddush is referred to as "Kiddusha Rabba" (The Great Kiddush).
- The custom is to cover the Challahs intended for "Lechem Mishneh" during the Kiddush. The reason for this is "so that the bread shall not see its shame," meaning that the bread actually takes precedence over the wine in importance, yet we sanctify over the wine and not over the bread.
