The kitchen is alive with activity. Pots are bubbling on the stove, and the small home fills with the wonderful aromas of holiday cooking.

The Rebbetzin, of blessed memory, moves from one task to another with quiet joy. Preparing for the holidays was something she cherished deeply. She did not want anyone to take even the smallest part of the preparations away from her. Every detail was meaningful.

Even when she once suffered a fractured shoulder, she refused to give up the work. Despite the pain, she insisted on continuing with the preparations herself, determined to take part in every aspect of welcoming the holiday.

Sukkot is approaching, and the Rav prepares to leave the house to buy the arba minim, the four special plants used during the holiday.

But before he goes, he pauses.

He turns to the Rebbetzin and asks for her blessing.

This was not unusual. The Rav sought her blessing before many important moments. Before baking matzah for Passover, before special tasks, and even before leaving the house. He deeply believed in the power of her blessing and never overlooked it.

A Blessing Before Learning

One year, on the night of Shavuot, the Rav finished the festive holiday meal and left for the Lederman synagogue, where he planned to learn Torah throughout the night.

But suddenly, he turned around and hurried back home.

What had happened?

He realized that he had forgotten something important.

He had not asked the Rebbetzin for her blessing.

Without hesitation, he returned to the house so he could receive her warm blessing that he should succeed in his learning and remain alert throughout the night. To him, that blessing was priceless.

What Did You Buy Your Wife for the Holiday

On another occasion, just before Sukkot, several businessmen came to receive the Rav’s blessing for success.

Afterward, they also approached the Rebbetzin to receive her blessing.

Rebbetzin Helen Mirilashvili later recalled the scene with great emotion.

The men explained that they had already prepared for the holiday. They had built their sukkah and purchased the arba minim.

But the Rebbetzin had another question.

“And what did you buy your wife for the holiday?” she asked.

The businessmen looked surprised.

“Our wives have plenty of money,” they answered. “They can buy whatever they want. We work hard so that our wives and children have everything they need.”

The Rebbetzin smiled gently.

“That is not the main thing,” she replied. “What matters is that you are the one who buys her something, especially for her. That she receives a gift from her husband for the holiday.”

One of the businessmen then asked her a question in return.

“And what did the Rav buy the Rebbetzin for the holiday?”

The Best Gift of All

The Rebbetzin laughed softly and sat down.

It was clear how proud and happy she felt as she answered.

“The Rav bought me Torah,” she said with a smile. “Torah is the best merchandise.”

Those present smiled as well. Her answer was both simple and profound.

For the Rebbetzin, Torah was not only something the Rav learned. It was the heart of their home, the foundation of their lives, and the greatest gift he could give her.

She truly lived with Torah in her soul.

And for her, there was no greater treasure.
