One of the most remarkable scientific discoveries in history that has saved tens of millions of lives around the world, was the groundbreaking work of Dr. Louis Pasteur, who developed a method of healing by using the very microbe from which we seek protection. His discovery stands among the most important achievements in the history of medicine.

Dr. Pasteur conducted extensive research on the treatment of infectious diseases, including rabies. After developing a vaccine based on weakened forms of the virus, his method achieved extraordinary success far beyond expectations. Following this breakthrough, Pasteur continued applying the same principle to other diseases. To this day, his discovery remains a central foundation for modern vaccination.

The Principle of “Like Cures Like”

It is also worth noting the development of homeopathy, a method of treatment based on the principle of “like cures like” — the idea that a disease can be treated with substances that produce symptoms similar to those of the illness itself. This approach has gained considerable popularity throughout the Western world and reflects a similar concept: healing through controlled exposure to the source of illness.

A Surprising Connection to the Talmud

In this context, an interesting historical account appears in the book Mevo She’arim, written by a contemporary of Dr. Louis Pasteur. The author records testimony from respected and trustworthy individuals who heard from Pasteur’s close friend, Rabbi Dr. Israel Michael Rabinovitch, that Pasteur drew inspiration for his revolutionary research from an unexpected source — the Talmud.

Rabbi Dr. Rabinovitch, who lived in Paris, was engaged in translating the Talmud into French. His translation of the tractates in the Order of Moed eventually came into the hands of his friend, Dr. Pasteur.

While reading it, the distinguished scientist encountered a surprising statement in the Talmud, in Tractate Yoma: “One who has been bitten by a rabid dog should be fed from the lobe of its liver.” (Yoma 84a)

This passage suggests treating the illness using material derived from the very animal carrying the disease.

According to this account, the idea deeply intrigued Dr. Pasteur and prompted him to begin a series of experiments. The results eventually led to discoveries that transformed modern medicine and helped save countless lives across the globe.

This story echoes the famous teaching from Pirkei Avot (5:22): “Turn it over and turn it over again, for everything is contained within it.”

The deeper one studies the Torah, the more wisdom and insight can be discovered within it.
