Camila Podgajetz’s journey began with a single act of separating challah, yet it quickly grew into something far greater. What started as one meaningful experience turned into a lasting source of spiritual growth, community connection, and ongoing blessing.

“I immigrated to Israel from Brazil as a Zionist,” Camila explains. “Some years ago, a close friend of mine became ill. We live in Tel Aviv, and she decided to organize a challah separation evening so that people could pray for her recovery.”

At that time, Camila had never even heard of the mitzvah.

“It was the first time I encountered the idea of separating challah,” she recalls. “The evening was incredibly powerful and deeply moving.”

Responding to a Time of War

Shortly after that first gathering, Operation Protective Edge began. The atmosphere across Israel was tense and heavy.

“It was a very difficult period,” Camila remembers. “I felt strongly that I had to do something. Of course I couldn’t take up a weapon and go fight, but I wanted to contribute in some way to the national effort.”

She decided to do what she believed a Jewish woman could do best.

“I went to the community fitness center in our neighborhood and asked if they would allow us to use their space for a challah gathering. The owner generously cleared the cafeteria for us.”

Camila organized the evening and invited women from the neighborhood.

“Forty women arrived, each bringing her own bowl. Together we prepared dough, separated challah, and prayed for the safety of the soldiers.”

A Community Tradition Is Born

What happened that night did not end when the gathering was over. Instead, it became the beginning of a meaningful tradition in the neighborhood.

“Since then,” Camila says, “we have continued organizing challah gatherings from time to time. We invite rebbetzins to lead evenings for different situations in life, both joyful occasions and more challenging ones.”

One evening was dedicated to three women in the neighborhood who longed to have children.

“That same month,” Camila says with emotion, “all three women became pregnant.”

Personal Change and Spiritual Growth

The holiness and merit generated by these gatherings did not remain only within the community. They also transformed Camila’s own life.

“Because of these Hidabroot challah gatherings, I decided to begin separating challah in my home every week.”

From that moment, her spiritual journey continued to deepen.

“One good thing led to another,” she explains. “Of course we saw blessings and positive changes, but beyond that, this mitzvah helped shape who I am.”

Becoming a Better Person

Camila describes the profound personal impact the mitzvah has had on her life.

“It has made me a better person,” she says. “A better mother, a better wife, a better friend, and a better daughter. Most importantly, it has helped me become a better Jew.”

She believes that the mitzvah brings holiness directly into the home.

“The house is filled with a sense of sanctity,” she explains. “And one mitzvah leads to another. It inspires hospitality, kindness, and acts of generosity.”

The Moment That Changed Everything

Looking back, Camila sees clearly where the transformation began.

“That very first challah gathering organized by Hidabroot truly changed my life.”

What began as a single evening of prayer for a sick friend became a source of ongoing faith, connection, and goodness that continues to shape her home and community.
