Throughout Jewish history, certain individuals quietly changed the course of events through courage and faith. One such figure is Jehosheba, a woman whose brave actions preserved the royal line of King David during one of its most dangerous moments.

Although her story is brief in Tanach, her impact was enormous. Through determination, devotion, and self sacrifice, Jehosheba ensured that the Davidic dynasty would continue.

A Royal Daughter in the Time of the First Temple

Jehosheba was the daughter of Joram, King of Judah, the sister of King Ahaziah, and the wife of Jehoiada the High Priest. She lived during the time of the First Temple, a period filled with political instability and spiritual struggle.

Her family connections placed her at the center of royal life in the Kingdom of Judah.

Athaliah’s Attempt to Destroy the Royal Line

After King Ahaziah of Judah was killed by the messengers of Jehu, a dramatic and dangerous situation unfolded. His mother, Athaliah, sought to seize power for herself.

In order to secure the throne, Athaliah attempted to eliminate all the male heirs of the royal House of David. By destroying the remaining descendants, she hoped to rule Judah without challenge.

A Courageous Rescue

In a remarkable act of devotion and bravery, Jehosheba secretly rescued Joash, the infant son of Ahaziah. At great personal risk, she took the child and hid him from Athaliah.

Together with her husband Jehoiada the High Priest, she concealed the young prince in the House of Hashem. There he remained hidden for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

When Joash reached the age of seven, Jehoiada revealed him publicly. The rightful heir to the throne was crowned king of Judah, and Athaliah’s reign came to an end.

Preserving the House of David

By rescuing Joash, Jehosheba saved the royal line of King David from destruction. Through her actions, Hashem safeguarded the Davidic dynasty from generation to generation.

As noted in Seder Elyahu Zuta chapter 3:

"If not for the covenant Hashem made with David, Joash would have been killed as well, and the monarchy of the House of David would have been completely abolished."

The Biblical Account

The story of Joash’s concealment appears in 2 Kings 11:1 to 3 and 2 Chronicles 22:10 to 12:

"When Athaliah, the mother of Ahaziah, saw that her son was dead, she arose and destroyed all the royal offspring. But Jehosheba, the daughter of King Joram, sister of Ahaziah, took Joash son of Ahaziah, and stole him from among the king’s sons who were being killed; and she hid him and his nurse in the bedroom. So they hid him from Athaliah, and he was not killed. He remained with her in the House of Hashem for six years, while Athaliah reigned over the land."

Honored Among the Righteous Women of Israel

Jewish sources recognize Jehosheba as one of the righteous women whose courage and devotion left a lasting mark on Jewish history.

In Daat Sofrim it is written:

"Jehosheba is included among the great list of women in Israel who merited to have their names established for eternity by the prophets of Hashem, becoming examples of self sacrifice and loyalty."

The Treasury of Midrashim also lists her among twenty three righteous women of Israel. The text states:

"Twenty three righteous women, great in their righteousness, were in Israel, and they are: Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel, and Leah… Jehosheba, and others."

A Story Reflected in the Words of the Sages

Additional rabbinic sources connect verses in Tanach to the story of Jehosheba and Jehoiada.

In Yalkut Shimoni, the verse in Psalms is explained in connection with Joash’s rescue:

"And Jehosheba took Joash, the daughter of the king," concerning which it is written, "For He will hide me in His sukkah in the day of trouble; He will conceal me in the secret place of His tent; He will lift me high upon a rock."
Yalkut Shimoni Melachim II Remez 245

On the verse in Ecclesiastes, "Two are better than one," Ecclesiastes Rabbah explains:

Rabbi Nehemiah said, "The two refers to Jehoiada and Jehosheba, better than one refers to each on their own, and the cord of three strands refers to the Sanhedrin who agreed with them to anoint Joash and to execute Athaliah."
Ecclesiastes Rabbah 4:1

Another teaching in Yalkut Shimoni states:

"For You will light my lamp" refers to Jehosheba.
"Hashem my God will enlighten my darkness" refers to Jehoiada.
Yalkut Shimoni Shmuel II Remez 561

The Lesson of Jehosheba

What can we learn from Jehosheba so that we too may join the great list of deserving men and women of Israel?

Her story teaches the power of care, selflessness, dedication, and courage. She acted with bravery and without compromise in order to fulfill the will of Hashem.

Through quiet determination and faith, one person can protect an entire future. May we merit to follow such an example.
