Shaar HaBitachon Explained: How Trust in Hashem Brings True Peace and Security

Why relying on Hashem leads to inner calm, emotional strength, and a life free from anxiety

A deep study of Sha’ar HaBitachon from Chovot HaLevavot by Rabbeinu Bachya is one of the most powerful ways to achieve true inner calm through trust and reliance on Hashem.

In this series, we explore Sha’ar HaBitachon together, delving into Rabbeinu Bachya’s teachings on how genuine trust in Hashem can transform our lives, bring inner peace, and help us become happier and better people. This is the second article in the series.

A New Perspective on Trust

In the previous article, Rabbeinu Bachya explained that trust in Hashem is the most essential quality for one who serves Him. This trust benefits a person not only in spiritual matters, but also in the practical realities of everyday life.

He teaches that a person who truly trusts in Hashem is completely at ease regarding his livelihood, even more so than an alchemist who believes he can turn simple metals into gold and silver.

An alchemist appears calm because he thinks he can create wealth at will. Yet Rabbeinu Bachya explains that a person who trusts in Hashem is far more secure, because his confidence is rooted in reality.

Rabbeinu Bachya outlines ten ways in which one who trusts in Hashem surpasses the alchemist. In this article, we will focus on the first two.

First Advantage: Unlimited Sources of Sustenance

The first advantage is that the alchemist depends on specific materials for his work. Without them, he cannot function, and they are not always available.

In contrast, one who trusts in Hashem knows that his sustenance can come through any means, at any time.

As the verse states: “Man does not live by bread alone, but by everything that comes from the mouth of Hashem.”

Nothing can prevent Hashem from providing a person with what he needs, wherever he is. Rabbeinu Bachya brings several examples from the prophets to demonstrate this idea:

Eliyahu was sustained by ravens, who brought him food morning and evening. He was later sustained through a widow, whose small amount of flour and oil miraculously never ran out.
At another point, Eliyahu was given food and water by an angel in the wilderness, which sustained him for forty days. Ovadiah hid one hundred prophets in caves and provided them with bread and water.

David HaMelech also teaches: “The lions may grow poor and hungry, but those who seek Hashem lack nothing good,” and “Those who fear Him will not lack anything.”

The message is clear: Hashem can provide for a person in any way He chooses.

Second Advantage: Peace Without Risk

The second advantage is that the alchemist’s work is not only demanding, but also dangerous.

He must constantly engage in complex processes, and the fumes and substances he works with may even harm or kill him. His work requires ongoing effort, day and night, with no real rest.

In contrast, one who trusts in Hashem lives with a sense of protection and calm. His heart is secure, knowing that whatever happens comes from Hashem and is ultimately for his good.

Because of this, he is able to accept everything with joy, and his livelihood comes to him with tranquility and peace.

As it says: “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters.” Even in difficult environments, Hashem provides calm and sustenance for those who trust in Him.

The Power of True Trust

Rabbeinu Bachya presents a striking contrast between the illusion of control and the reality of trust.

While the alchemist relies on fragile, limited means, the person who trusts in Hashem lives with a deep sense of security, knowing that everything comes from a higher source.

Through this understanding, we see that trust in Hashem is not only a spiritual concept, but also a powerful foundation for emotional resilience, inner peace, and a calmer, more balanced life.
