In moments of uncertainty, when fear begins to rise, we often look for something steady to hold onto. Jewish tradition offers a clear and powerful direction: turn your heart toward Hashem and trust in His salvation.

The Quote

“We were cautioned in this: if a person sees that trouble is near, the salvation of Hashem should be in his heart and he should trust in it, as it is said, ‘Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him,’ and it is also written, ‘Who are you that you fear a mortal who will die?’”

What Is Rabbeinu Yonah Teaching Us

Rabbeinu Yonah addresses one of the most natural human responses: fear in the face of danger.

He explains that when a person senses trouble approaching, the instinct may be to panic or focus on the threat. But the Torah teaches a different response.

In the verse, “When you go out to war against your enemies, you shall not fear them,” we are instructed not to be overwhelmed by what we see, even when the danger appears great.

Instead, we are meant to shift our focus.

Where True Security Comes From

Rabbeinu Yonah emphasizes that true security does not come from circumstances, but from trust in Hashem.

The verse in Tehillim teaches that salvation is always near to those who fear Hashem. This means that even when it is not visible, help is already close.

The verse in Yeshayahu adds another layer.

“Who are you that you fear a mortal who will die?”

Human beings, no matter how powerful they may seem, are limited and temporary. They are not the source of our fate.

This perspective helps place fear in its proper context.

A Message for Our Times

In times like these, when the world can feel uncertain and the situation around us is tense, these words become especially meaningful.

It is natural to feel concern.

But alongside that, we are reminded not to let fear take over.

Hashem is with us.

Salvation is not distant. It is near.

Strength Through Faith

Rabbeinu Yonah teaches that when we face difficulty, we should hold onto trust.

To believe that Hashem sees us.
To turn to Him in prayer.
And to remember that we are not alone.

This mindset does not remove challenges, but it gives us the strength to face them.
