A Pregnancy With No Hope: The Heartbeat That Appeared

Told her pregnancy had no hope, she chose to wait. What happened next revealed a powerful story of faith, prayer, and unexpected life.

It happened on the eve of Sukkot a few years ago.

Rotem Malka Cohen, a mother of two at the time, was suffering from severe back pain. It was something she had experienced before, so she went to the emergency room expecting a simple solution. Her plan was straightforward: get a pain-relief shot and return home in time to enjoy the holiday with her family.

But Hashem had a different plan.

A Shocking Discovery

Instead of receiving a shot, Rotem was given unexpected news.

“You are pregnant.”

“I never imagined that would be the doctor’s answer,” she recalls. “It was complete shock.”

The doctors sent her for an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy, and it was real. What started as a routine visit quickly turned into a life changing moment.

But the shock did not end there.

Words That Changed Everything

Two weeks later, Rotem went for a prenatal checkup. An emergency room physician, filling in for her regular doctor, performed the ultrasound.

Then came three words that shattered her.

“The pregnancy isn’t viable.”

Rotem struggled to understand. What did that mean? How could it be that something had begun, and now she was being told it could not continue?

The doctor explained that the pregnancy had not developed as expected and recommended ending it.

“I was crying so hard I could not even process what I was hearing,” Rotem says.

When the doctor tried to comfort her by pointing out that she already had two healthy children, it only made things more painful. To Rotem, this was not just a medical situation. It was a life.

She asked if there was any chance things could still develop. Maybe it was too early.

The doctor responded honestly but firmly. Based on her experience, she did not believe it would change. “Unless a miracle happens,” she added, “and I am not much of a believer.”

Still, she told Rotem to do what felt right.

Choosing to Wait

The days that followed were incredibly difficult. Rotem found herself in a state of constant uncertainty. Should she wait? For how long? What was really happening?

After days of emotional struggle, she turned for guidance. In conversations with a rabbi and rebbetzin she trusted, and together with her husband, they made a decision.

“As long as the pregnancy was not dangerous, we would continue,” she says.

They decided to wait.

Faith in the Darkness

The waiting period was filled with prayer.

Rotem prayed constantly, asking Hashem for a turnaround. She hoped that at the next appointment, there would be a different outcome.

“I prayed that the fetus would appear, that there would be a heartbeat, that I would merit a miracle,” she shares.

She even made a promise. If she saw a salvation, she would thank Hashem publicly and share her story so that other women would not rush into decisions without giving time and space.

The Moment of Truth

At week eleven, Rotem went for another checkup with a different doctor. With a trembling heart, she asked him for good news.

The ultrasound began.

And then, everything changed.

“There is a fetus,” the doctor said. “And there is a heartbeat.”

Rotem could hardly believe it.

“I cried like I had never cried before,” she says. “Tears of happiness. I experienced a miracle.”

A Message to Others

Months later, Rotem gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Looking back, she feels deep gratitude, not only for the outcome but even for the challenge itself.

She later returned to the doctor who had advised her to end the pregnancy and shared her experience. Not out of anger, but out of a desire to raise awareness.

“Today it was me,” she reflected. “Tomorrow it could be someone who has waited years for a child, or someone without faith who might follow that advice immediately.”

Trust in Hashem

Rotem kept her promise. She shared her story to bring strength to others.

Her message is simple but powerful.

Do not rush. Take time. Seek guidance. And most importantly, hold on to faith.

Even when things seem unclear, even when the situation looks final, Hashem can change everything in an instant.

How good is Hashem.
