(Photo: shutterstock)Rabbi Zusha Horowitz, a well-known figure in the Chassidic community of Elad, shared a powerful story in his class this week.
Three Years of Waiting
Two weeks ago, a member of the community came to him with tearful eyes.
For three long years, his eldest son had been struggling in the dating world. One suggestion after another fell through. Nothing seemed to move forward.
The father tried everything he could think of. He explored different approaches, sought advice, and even turned inward, asking himself whether he had hurt someone in the past.
With courage, he reached out to a family he had once nearly become engaged to years earlier. He asked for forgiveness, hoping that perhaps something unresolved was standing in the way of his son’s success.
But still, nothing changed.
Broken and exhausted, he came to the rabbi.
An Unexpected Question
Rabbi Horowitz listened carefully and then asked a surprising question.
“Have you done any renovations in your home in recent years?”
The man was confused, but he answered honestly. Yes, he had. A few years earlier, his home had gone through major renovations, including expansions.
The rabbi continued.
“Was there drilling and noise during that time?”
Of course there was. Like most renovations, there had been constant drilling and loud work, even during afternoon rest hours.
A Different Kind of Fix
The rabbi gave him clear instructions.
Go to every neighbor, from the top floor to the ground floor. Bring a small gift, something like cake or wine, and ask for forgiveness.
Do not stop until every neighbor personally says, “I forgive you.”
The message was simple: make peace with everyone.
The Turning Point
The man took the advice seriously. He went from neighbor to neighbor, speaking, apologizing, and making amends.
It was not easy, but he continued until the very last neighbor forgave him.
The next day, everything changed.
A Joyful Ending
The father returned to Rabbi Horowitz, this time with joy in his eyes.
“My son got engaged,” he said.
Right after completing the process of reconciliation, the long-awaited yes finally came.
Conclusion
Sometimes we search far and wide for solutions, trying everything we can think of.
But the answer may be much closer than we realize.
A small act of humility, a sincere apology, a step toward peace, can open doors we did not even know were closed.
When we repair what is between us and others, Hashem can take care of the rest.
