In times of challenge, many people look for words that can offer strength, clarity, and perspective. The teachings of the Zohar, as explained in Ma’amarei Chizuk by the kabbalist Rabbi Daniel Frish, provide deep insight into suffering, growth, and our connection with Hashem.

Here are nine powerful teachings that can strengthen your emunah and help you better understand life’s tests.

1. Hashem Waits for Every Person

“Hashem is patient with the righteous, and He is even more patient with the wicked, as He awaits their return in teshuvah or that they will bring forth a righteous child. Hashem is exacting with the righteous, testing them to elevate them and reveal their goodness, or to refine the body and illuminate the soul. The Shechinah afflicts the wicked in order to awaken them to teshuvah.”

2. Your Soul Calls You Back

“When a person sins and ignores it, his soul testifies before Hashem against the body, so he will not sink deeper into sin. Hashem then commands the Shechinah to awaken him to return and repair. This awakening can come through suffering. However, one who rises at midnight to learn Torah is awakened instead with mercy and blessing.”

3. True Strength Is Self Control

“There is no greater level than one who controls his desires and stands strong in a test. Such a person merits the Kingdom of Heaven. Even though Hashem knows everything, He created the yetzer hara to test a person, to reveal his righteousness and increase his reward.”

4. Turning Tests into Victory

“One who stands firm in a test and accepts suffering with love subdues all negative forces, cancels harsh judgments, and casts them back upon the Satan. The Satan himself regrets testing a person who rises through the challenge.”

5. Serving Hashem Through Struggle

“To love Hashem with all your heart means with both inclinations, the good and the evil. When a person overcomes his yetzer hara, he serves Hashem through it. The yetzer hara itself fulfills Hashem’s will by creating the challenge, and when a person overcomes it, he brings honor to Hashem and earns great reward.”

6. Hashem Helps Those Who Struggle

“One who fights against the yetzer hara is helped by Hashem. The yetzer hara primarily challenges those who are close to Hashem. The trials of the righteous are for their ultimate good and merit.”

7. Why the Righteous Sometimes Leave Early

“The passing of righteous individuals before their time can be due to the sins of the generation. Their departure serves to sweeten judgment and bring atonement to others.”

8. The Challenge of the Final Generation

“In the final generation, there will be many tests, especially for those who learn Torah. They will experience great pressure. Yet those who persevere in Torah will merit spiritual repair. Those who support Torah learners will also receive special strength, aided by the spirit of Moshe, helping them overcome both material and spiritual struggles.”

9. The Purpose of the Final Exile

“The trials of the final exile are meant to purify and refine the Jewish people. Through these challenges, those who remain strong will merit redemption.”

Conclusion

These teachings remind us that life’s challenges are not random. Every struggle, every test, and every moment of difficulty carries meaning and purpose.

When we choose to grow, to strengthen our emunah, and to keep moving forward, we are not only overcoming our challenges. We are transforming them into something eternal.
