In his final words to his sons, Yaakov revealed a profound secret concerning the redemption of the Jewish people. Rabbi Shalom Noach Berezovsky explains that Yaakov was hinting to his sons about the immense spiritual power hidden in the unity of the Jewish people, and how this unity itself becomes the path to complete redemption.
The Secret of Redemption Through Unity
In this week’s Torah portion, Parashat Vayechi, the verse states: “Gather yourselves together, and I will tell you what will happen to you at the end of days.” On this, the sages teach: “Yaakov sought to reveal the end, but the Divine Presence departed from him” (Pesachim 56a). The Netivot Shalom, quoting Rabbi Shmuel of Kaminka, offers a beautiful reading of the words “I will tell” (agidah), linking it to the word agudah, meaning a bundle, a union, a binding together. In this reading, Yaakov’s message is not merely informational, but instructional: unite yourselves, bind yourselves together, because this will be of immeasurable importance in the end of days.
The sages teach that redemption can come in two ways: “If they merit it – I will hasten it; if they do not merit it – in its appointed time.” Yaakov, in his final blessing and instruction to his sons, was giving an eternal piece of guidance for those times when Israel may not be in the state of “if they merit it.” His advice is contained in the words “Gather yourselves together.” This refers not only to physical gathering, but to inner unity, spiritual cohesion, and a willingness to rise above personal differences.
When the people of Israel bind themselves to one another and see themselves as one collective soul, they are elevated to a level worthy of redemption. Yaakov was revealing that the key to hastening the final redemption lies in the unity of the nation. The Netivot Shalom continues by citing the verse, “And your people are all righteous.” The righteous teachers explain that when Israel stands as one, they are all considered righteous.
Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk writes that sins exist primarily on the level of the individual. A single person may stumble, but the collective soul of Israel always remains holy. This, says the Netivot Shalom, is the secret Yaakov revealed. Even if, in the end of days, Israel may not individually be fully deserving, the path remains open to gather together. Through unity, they become worthy of complete redemption.
Why Baseless Hatred Delays Redemption
This insight also sheds light on the well-known teaching of the sages that “The Second Temple was destroyed because of baseless hatred” (Yoma 9b). At first glance, this seems difficult to understand. Why was this particular sin so severe that it brought about the destruction of the Temple?
The answer lies precisely in the secret Yaakov revealed. Baseless hatred fractures the people into isolated individuals. It transforms a nation into disconnected fragments. But redemption, and the rebuilding of the Temple, depend on unity. The Temple is not merely a building; it is the spiritual expression of the oneness of Israel before God. When hatred breaks that unity, it undermines the very foundation upon which redemption stands.
For this reason, the evil inclination exerts special force in matters that create division, resentment, and conflict among Jews. If unity is the secret of redemption, then division is its greatest obstacle. This is the deeper meaning of Yaakov’s words: “Gather yourselves together.”
Yaakov’s message was not intended only for his own generation. He was laying down a principle for all future generations: the secret of redemption depends on the unity of Israel. Baseless hatred leads to fragmentation and exile, while unconditional love and unity open the path toward rebuilding the Temple and bringing Mashiach. By saying, “Gather yourselves together, and I will tell you,” Yaakov was teaching that the revelation of the end of days is itself bound up with unity. The true secret is not merely when redemption will come, but how it comes — when a people rise above division and become one.
