A moving story and timeless insight on how love, warmth, and inner connection give children the strength to endure life’s challenges and build an unshakable foundation of faith and resilience

A young boy lost his father at an early age. His mother was not in good health, and he and his siblings had no choice but to go out and find work to support the family. Each of them went to a different place, and this boy turned to the wealthy man of the town.

The wealthy man, known for his cold and unfeeling nature, agreed, with what he considered generosity, to see the boy. The orphan asked for a small amount of charity, but the man replied that there were no free gifts. If he wanted money, he would need to earn it. The task he offered was harsh. The boy would need to sit in a freezing lake throughout the entire night. If he succeeded, he would receive all the money he needed.

A Mother’s Light

The boy returned home excited and told his mother about the opportunity. She was horrified and warned him that he could freeze to death. But the boy insisted. Without income, he feared they would not survive anyway. Seeing that she could not change his mind, his mother lit a large lantern and sat near the lake to be close to him.

When night fell, the boy entered the icy water. The wealthy man watched from afar, expecting him to fail. Hour after hour passed. The night was long and bitterly cold, but by morning the boy emerged alive, though nearly frozen.

Justice and Truth

That afternoon, he went to collect his payment. To his shock, the wealthy man refused. He claimed that the boy had not fulfilled the condition, arguing that the mother’s lantern had warmed the lake and made the challenge easier. The boy protested, insisting the water had been freezing, but the man would not listen.

The boy and his mother turned to the great sage, the Chida, for justice. After hearing the story, the Chida summoned the wealthy man and offered him a cup of coffee. The man took a sip and immediately complained that it was cold. The Chida pointed out that the cup had been placed near a pot on the fire and asked whether that had warmed it. When the man admitted it had not, the Chida gently exposed the contradiction. If the fire could not warm the coffee from a distance, how could a small lantern warm an entire lake? The man understood and was instructed to pay the boy in full.

Afterward, the Chida asked the boy how he managed to survive the freezing night. The boy answered simply. He saw his mother’s lantern and knew she was waiting for him. That gave him the strength to endure until morning.

Warming a Cold World

This story carries a powerful message. We live in a world that can often feel cold and distant. Our role is to bring warmth into it, not only through what we do, but through who we are. Inner warmth can sustain not only ourselves, but those around us.

The story of Yosef offers another profound example. In Egypt, surrounded by constant temptation, he faced a daily struggle. At a critical moment, when the challenge intensified, he found the strength to resist and walk away.

That strength came from the image of his father. Yosef carried within him a deep awareness of who he was and what was expected of him. This inner connection guided him even when no one else was present.

What Parents Truly Give

As parents, we cannot always be physically present in our children’s lives. We do not know every challenge they will face. But we can give them something that stays with them wherever they go.

That gift is the inner sense of being loved, supported, and guided. It is built through patience, through listening, and through genuine care. Even small moments of connection can leave a lasting imprint.

Lighting the Flame

During Chanukah, a time that celebrates light and growth, we are reminded to increase light day by day. To add warmth, encouragement, and presence. To nurture a flame within our children that will remain strong even in difficult moments.

The fire that is built on truth and love cannot be extinguished. No matter how strong the challenges may be, it continues to burn. May we be able to bring that light into our lives and into the lives of our children, and to see it grow into something strong, steady, and enduring.
