“Jerusalem was destroyed only because people insisted on strict justice according to the law and did not go beyond the letter of the law.”
The 10th of Tevet is a fast day on which we reflect and repent for the siege of Jerusalem that ultimately led to its destruction. Our sages teach that Jerusalem was not destroyed because people lacked justice, but because they clung to it too rigidly. They pursued fairness and strict justice, yet failed to act with compassion beyond the letter of the law. This approach ultimately brought destruction and sorrow for generations.
When Justice Becomes Harmful in Education
One of the major causes of breakdown in the education of children or students is a similar pattern. When parents or teachers focus obsessively on enforcing rules, insisting on being right, and constantly pursuing strict justice with a child, the results can be damaging. It is important to emphasize that justice is a positive and essential value. It represents truth, integrity, and the pursuit of what is right. However, it cannot stand alone. Alongside justice must come flexibility, compromise, and the willingness to go beyond what is strictly deserved, especially when we are technically “right.”
Wisdom Versus Being Right
There is a well known phrase often said to drivers: be wise, not just right. This idea reflects a deeper truth about the relationship between wisdom and justice. Wisdom is the ability to understand, analyze, and make thoughtful decisions. Justice is the application of fairness, honesty, and respect for others.
When wisdom operates without justice, it can become manipulative, serving personal interests without regard for others. Decisions may appear efficient or clever, but they can harm people’s rights, feelings, or needs. For example, a school principal might improve systems and increase enrollment, but if it comes at the expense of teachers’ well being or ethical standards, it ultimately damages trust and creates a harmful environment.
On the other hand, justice without wisdom can also be problematic. Applying rules rigidly, without understanding individual circumstances, may seem morally correct but can lead to impractical or even harmful outcomes. What appears fair in theory may feel deeply unfair in reality.
The Impact on Children
In the context of raising children, a rigid and relentless pursuit of justice can be particularly destructive. When parents or educators insist on specific behaviors or demands that do not take into account the child’s emotional world or developmental needs, it often leads to resistance, tension, and even damage to the child’s self confidence.
This rigidity may stem from good intentions, such as a desire to instill discipline, fear for the child’s future, or simply a lack of understanding of the child’s inner experience. However, when a child feels that their feelings and needs are not understood or respected, they may begin to feel unimportant or undervalued. Over time, this can create emotional barriers and lead to strong resistance.
When Children Push Back
When parents or teachers encounter rebellious behavior, one of the first things to examine is their own approach. If the relationship has been built on constant insistence without sensitivity, this may be a central factor in the child’s response.
It is also important to recognize that children learn not only from what we say, but from what we model. Parents or teachers who consistently demonstrate rigid justice and unyielding insistence may inadvertently teach children to behave in the same way, to insist on their own views at all costs, or conversely, to ignore their own feelings and needs entirely.
Parents and educators are called to build, not to destroy. The balance between justice and going beyond the letter of the law is a foundational principle in education. The ideal approach is to combine wisdom and justice, so that decisions are both thoughtful and morally sound.
Wisdom allows us to understand the full complexity of a situation, while justice ensures that our actions are fair and respectful. Together, they create a balanced and effective approach.
Raising Children with Moral Depth
Teaching children to act beyond the strict letter of the law encourages them to develop a strong moral conscience and a deeper sense of responsibility. Instead of acting only out of fear of punishment or desire for reward, they learn to act from an inner understanding of what is right.
This fosters personal maturity, social awareness, and healthier relationships. It also builds individuals who contribute positively to their surroundings and uphold ethical values even when no one is watching.
Open and empathetic communication with children is essential. Speak to them in a way they can understand. Explain the reasons behind expectations. Show a willingness to listen and engage in dialogue.
Focus on encouragement and positive reinforcement when they act appropriately, rather than relying solely on discipline. This approach strengthens trust and helps children feel seen and valued.
Creating a Healthier Future
Life is not always simple, and many situations require more than just applying rules. Education that includes compassion, flexibility, and moral awareness equips children with the tools they need to navigate complexity.
It builds individuals who act with integrity, respect, and care for others. This is how we create a healthy, moral society, one where people feel valued, respected, and secure. This is the truest path to a life guided by both justice and kindness.
