(Photo: Shutterstock)I was a regular kid.
Jumping rope, drawing, chatting with friends. I loved memorizing song lyrics and keeping up with new music, and somewhere in between, I also studied.
Nothing about me felt particularly special. I was just like everyone else.
The Teacher No One Expected
Then one day, something happened. Or more accurately, someone noticed something.
It was my teacher, Mrs. Green.
To be honest, she wasn’t the most popular teacher. She could be a bit intimidating, and most of us didn’t feel especially comfortable around her. But she ended up changing my life.
We were in the middle of rehearsals for our sixth grade Bat Mitzvah celebration, standing in the school auditorium, singing together and doing the same hand motions as everyone else.
Suddenly, she raised her hand and stopped everything.
“I think Penina has a really beautiful voice.”
A Voice I Didn’t Know I Had
The music stopped, and the coach asked me to sing the chorus on my own.
I sang quietly, a bit unsure, trying to reach the higher notes. She listened, then gently moved me to a lower part.
“Try it here,” she said.
This time, I sang more naturally. My voice, soft and a little trembling, came through more clearly. And somehow, it touched something in the room.
Before I fully understood what was happening, the coach made a surprising decision. She moved the original soloist to a different part and asked me to take the solo.
It felt awkward. Unexpected. But everyone around me seemed excited.
And me? I was just confused.
I had no idea I had a beautiful voice. It had never crossed my mind.
Discovering Something New
Music had always been part of my life. I loved it. I would organize little dances during class, and I had even started composing simple melodies when I was around ten.
But this was different.
This was the first time someone showed me that something I already had could become something meaningful.
At twelve years old, I discovered a talent I didn’t know existed.
Letting It Grow
From that moment on, things began to change. I started singing at school events, and over time, my confidence grew.
In high school, I became one of the lead soloists, and later continued singing in seminary. Step by step, this quiet ability became a central part of who I was.

A Voice That Still Calls
Today, I’m married, and that same voice is still with me.
It feels like something alive inside me, something that wants to be expressed, to be shared. I feel a strong desire to continue singing, to develop it, and to use it in a meaningful way.
And yet, there is also fear. The hesitation that comes when you stand at the edge of something you care about deeply.
The Gift We Are Given
Sometimes, it takes just one moment, one person, to reveal something hidden within us.
A talent, a strength, a path we never considered.
What we do with that discovery is up to us.
But the gift itself is already there.
