Before his passing, Yaakov blesses Yosef and introduces a striking new description of God, one that had not appeared earlier in the Torah: “the Shepherd.”

“And he blessed Yosef and said: ‘The God before whom my fathers Avraham and Yitzchak walked, the God who has shepherded me from my youth until this day’” (Bereishit 48:15).

This unique title invites us to explore its deeper meaning, and what it teaches us about our own lives.

Where Does the Shepherd Stand?

When a shepherd guides his flock, where does he position himself? At the front, in the middle, or behind?

The Torah’s descriptions suggest that shepherds most often walk behind the flock. For example, when Yaakov sends gifts to Esav, the verse describes those “walking behind the herds.” Similarly, the prophet Amos describes how God took him “from behind the flock,” and King David is described as being taken “from behind the nursing sheep” to lead Israel.

It becomes clear that the shepherd’s place is not at the front, but behind.

Leading Through Subtle Influence

Guiding sheep is a delicate process. It requires a deep understanding of their instincts and behavior. Sheep naturally follow one another, moving as a group. When they sense gentle pressure from behind, they instinctively move forward.

The shepherd uses this to his advantage. By applying subtle pressure to the last sheep, he sets off a chain reaction that moves the entire flock forward. From behind, the shepherd can observe everything: who is lagging behind, who has strayed, and who needs help. If he were in front, he would not be able to see the full picture.

In this way, the shepherd leads without appearing to lead. Each sheep thinks it is simply following the one ahead, unaware that the true direction is being guided from behind.

Why Yaakov Calls God “The Shepherd”

Yaakov’s life was filled with both moments of clarity and moments of concealment. At times, God’s presence was evident and uplifting. At other times, life felt uncertain, even abandoned.

In his final moments, Yaakov looks back and recognizes something profound: God, his Shepherd, had been guiding him all along — even in the most difficult and confusing times.

What once seemed like a series of disconnected hardships now reveals itself as a carefully guided journey. Behind every challenge stood a faithful Shepherd, directing events with precision and purpose.

Seeing Beyond What Is Visible

Yaakov, who at this stage could no longer see physically, attained a deeper kind of vision. Though his eyes had dimmed, his spiritual insight had never been clearer.

He tells Yosef, “I never expected to see your face again, and now God has shown me even your children.”

In his physical blindness, Yaakov gains a higher clarity — an ability to see the Divine hand behind all that had happened to him.

A Message for the Future

Yaakov shares this insight with Yosef and his descendants just as they are about to enter the long and painful exile in Egypt. He prepares them for a reality in which God’s guidance will not always be visible.

He teaches them that even in times of concealment, the Shepherd is still there, guiding from behind the scenes.

There will come a time, Yaakov hints, when God will reveal Himself openly once again. At the burning bush, God will declare that He is now leading from the front, performing open miracles and redeeming His people with a mighty hand.

Until then, the leadership remains hidden, subtle, and constant.

Learning to Recognize the Shepherd

Yaakov’s reflection offers a powerful lesson. Life does not always unfold in ways we understand. There are moments that feel chaotic, painful, or directionless. Yet behind it all, there is a guiding hand.

The challenge is to learn to recognize the Shepherd in our own lives, and to trust in His quiet guidance, even when we cannot see it clearly.

Perhaps most importantly, to express gratitude for the unseen path that leads us, step by step, exactly where we are meant to go.
