It depends. If the person fears that their friend will feel embarrassed or more hurt by hearing the details, they should ask forgiveness in a general way (Mishnah Berurah, siman 606, se’if katan 3).
Who feels their shortcomings more on the Day of Judgment?
The greater a person is, the more they feel their deficiencies (based on the Targum on Ecclesiastes 2:5, cited in Otzar HaChaim by Rabbi Yissachar Dov Babad).
What did Abraham ask of God when he offered the ram instead of his son Isaac?
At that moment, Abraham said: “Master of the Universe, swear to me that You will no longer test me or my descendants.” God swore to him. Then all suffering was removed from Abraham and transferred to Job, his relative, who was born that same day (Zoharei Chama, Parashat Bo).
How can it be that a community that has repented is considered as if they did nothing?
If there is baseless hatred among them (the Chida, Devarim Achadim, Part 1, Drush 6).
How much food should one eat on the eve of Yom Kippur?
Some say a person should eat double their usual amount, corresponding to the ninth and tenth days. However, one must be careful not to overeat excessively. At the very least, one should have two proper meals with bread (Kaf HaChaim; Halichot Moed).
What should be declared before reciting Kol Nidrei?
That everyone forgives one another — even those not present, and the word “we have forgiven” should be said aloud three times. This arouses great advocacy in Heaven (Ben Ish Chai, Year 1, Parashat Vayelech).
To complete one hundred blessings, may one recite the blessing over fragrant fruits on Yom Kippur (e.g., over apples)?
Yes, and there is no concern that one will come to eat them (Yalkut Yosef, Yamim Nora’im).
Is it permitted to use IV fluids on Yom Kippur to ease the fast?
For a healthy person — no. For someone ill but not in danger, or for a pregnant woman — yes. For a dangerously ill person who must eat, it is not permitted to use IV fluids as a substitute for eating and drinking (Igrot Moshe, Vol. 3 and 4).
If a patient must eat a small amount to avoid danger, should they continue fasting afterward?
Yes. After eating what is necessary to remove the danger, they must continue fasting and may not eat more (Torat HaMo’adim).
What should be announced before the Torah reading?
That young children who fasted for several hours should be given food (Yalkut Yosef, Yamim Nora’im).
Is it permitted to add extra forms of affliction on Yom Kippur to increase suffering?
No. This is considered disrespectful to the holiness of the day. One should rejoice in the festival, aside from the five afflictions explicitly commanded (BeTzel HaChochmah, Vol. 5).
Where in prayer is it normally forbidden to stand, but permitted on Yom Kippur?
Throughout the year, one who insists on reciting the Shema while standing is considered to be acting improperly. However, on Yom Kippur it is permitted, since one wishes to resemble the angels (Shulchan Aruch; Mishnah Berurah).
Why is the section of forbidden relationships read during the Mincha service?
Because on Yom Kippur people dress nicely, and there is concern that one may come to improper thoughts. Therefore, this section is read to remind a person to be careful and repent (Rabbeinu David Abudraham).
What should one be careful about when making Havdalah after Yom Kippur?
Ideally, no food should be placed on the table before Havdalah. If it was already placed, it should be covered, since the blessing over wine takes precedence (Harimu Michshol).
When did the Jewish people not observe Yom Kippur?
In the year that King Solomon built the First Temple (Yalkut Shimoni, Melachim I).
What action after Yom Kippur could bring redemption?
If everyone remained in the synagogue and prayed for redemption, rather than rushing home, they would certainly be redeemed (Mo’ed LeChol Chai).
