(Photo: Chaim Goldberg / Flash90)It is interesting that the story of Isaac’s life in Parashat Toldot begins when he is forty, at the time of his marriage to Rebecca.
What about the forty years before that?
What about the trial of the Binding of Isaac? And his time in Gan Eden? According to the commentators, from the Binding of Isaac at age thirty-seven until his marriage at forty, those three years were spent in a spiritual state associated with Gan Eden.
Why does the Torah begin recounting Isaac’s life story specifically from the point of his marriage?
The Purpose Is to Build
The ultimate purpose is not only self-sacrifice, as demonstrated in the Binding of Isaac, nor spiritual elevation alone, but rather engaging with and refining the world.
The goal is to create for God a “dwelling place in the lowest realms,” meaning to bring Him into the most natural and everyday parts of our lives, leaving no space devoid of His presence.
This is closely connected to building a family, as it says, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.”
Building Homes After Destruction
Our mission today, especially after the terrible devastation in which so many homes were destroyed, is to build homes.
How can we do this? By engaging in matchmaking, by bringing children into the world, or even by supporting new mothers.
If, for example, my neighbor has just given birth, she is contributing to the entire Jewish people. When I thank her, I am recognizing that her contribution benefits me as well, because there is no such thing as an isolated Jew. Every individual impacts the collective.
When that impact is positive, it deserves gratitude.
How can we show that gratitude? In many ways, such as bringing a cake, making a phone call, offering help with the children, or cooking a warm meal. Any gesture that shows care and support matters.
Our role today is to build homes in Israel, both spiritually and physically.
