I am in the process of returning to faith (teshuvah), and I feel that my path is very different from those around me. Sometimes it confuses me and makes me feel like maybe I’m not doing enough, or not on the right path. How can I stay connected and confident in my own journey?
“Teshuvah” is a general term for a process in which a person discovers a truth they did not know before, or finds within themselves the strength to move toward a truth they have long known and desired. Thank God, many people are returning to faith, but it is important to understand that each person’s path is different. It is shaped by their personality and by their inner structure, just as in other areas of life.
Interestingly, the way a person approaches the process of teshuvah often reflects patterns that appear in other aspects of their life as well. For example, a person who strives for perfection, may struggle to even begin the process. For them, a “process” is, by definition, imperfect, and they long for the finished result. Yet when such a person does enter the world of teshuvah, they often do so quickly and intensely, pushing themselves to go all the way in a short time.
On the other hand, someone who needs a sense of safety and stability will naturally choose a different path: small steps, with continuous self-reflection and reassessment of their environment. They will move forward only as long as they feel the ground is stable, the change is not overwhelming, and they remain in a secure space.
Both of these approaches, and many others, are valid paths in serving God. There is no single correct way. God does not expect us to imitate someone else’s journey, but to walk a path that fits the tools and strengths we have been given.
When we become aware of ourselves and of what truly matters to us along the way, we can stop comparing. Teshuvah is not a race or a competition. It is a deep, ongoing relationship between a person and their Creator — a relationship built on inner connection and faithfulness to who you are.
A process of teshuvah that is aligned with a person’s own strengths and current place in life is one that builds healthy foundations and leads to real growth and a genuine connection to serving God. What truly matters is the destination; the path itself can and should be traveled in the way that is right for each individual.
Of course, it is very important to progress in the teshuvah process with the guidance of a rabbi, in order to receive clear answers to specific questions along the way.
