Why was Chanukah established for eight days, if the miracle of the oil lasted only seven?

  • To allude to the mitzvah of brit milah, which is performed on the eighth day, for which the Jewish people risked their lives during the Greek persecutions (Kol Bo, siman 44).

  • Additionally, that year the Jews were unable to celebrate the festival of Sukkot due to the decrees, so an eight-day festival was instituted in its place (Aruch HaShulchan 670:5).

What Should Be Read on the 24th of Kislev?

Before lighting the candles, one should read Chapter 2 of the Book of Haggai (Ben Ish Chai, Vayeshev–Chanukah 23).

Why Isn’t the Chanukah Miracle Mentioned in the Mishnah?

Because the compiler of the Mishnah was a descendant of King David, and the Chanukah miracle was carried out by the Hasmoneans, who took the monarchy despite not being from the Davidic line (Yalkut Yosef, Chanukah, p. 31, in the name of the Chatam Sofer).

What Should One Do While the Candles Are Burning?

Ideally, one should sit near the candles for at least half an hour. During this time, a person should reflect on the miracle, recount it, and thank and praise God.

A beautiful custom is to immerse in a mikveh before lighting the first candle (Halichot Moed, p. 15).

How Can One Receive the Spiritual Light of the Holiday?

By studying the laws of Chanukah before the holiday, one merits to receive its spiritual illumination (Yalkut Yosef, Chanukah, p. 54; Moed LeChol Chai).

Shehecheyanu if One Missed the First Night

If someone was not home on the first night and their spouse lit on their behalf — including the blessing of Shehecheyanu, they should still recite Shehecheyanu the first time they personally light, even if that is on a later night (Chazon Ovadia, Chanukah, pp. 138–139).

Shabbat Candles vs. Chanukah Candles

If one can afford only one, Shabbat candles take precedence over Chanukah candles, because shalom bayit (peace in the home) is more important than publicizing the miracle.

This applies even to someone who lives alone, since shalom bayit also refers to avoiding physical discomfort (Responsa Ma’ayan Omer, vol. 3, p. 309).

May One Benefit from the Heat of the Candles?

It is forbidden to benefit not only from the light but also from the heat of the candles. Therefore, one may not warm their hands or heat food over the Chanukah menorah (Halichot Moed, pp. 48–49, בשם Rabbi Nissim Karelitz).

How Does a Convert Recite the Blessing?

A convert may say “Who performed miracles for our forefathers” (Chazon Ovadia, Chanukah, p. 127).

What Is Better to Study During Chanukah?

It is preferable to review material already learned, since the Greeks sought to make the Jews forget the Torah. The spiritual repair is to strengthen memory and retention (Yalkut Yosef, Chanukah, p. 55, in the name of the Shelah HaKadosh).

Lighting When Away from Home

If a family will not be home at lighting time, they have three options:

  1. Appoint a representative (such as a neighbor) to light for them at the proper time in a visible place.

  2. Light earlier, from plag hamincha (about 1¼ hours before nightfall), in a place visible to the public.

  3. Light upon returning home later at night, even if not visible to others (Halichot Moed, p. 21).

Visiting a Cemetery During Chanukah

It is permitted to visit a cemetery during Chanukah, provided it will not lead to crying. If it likely will, the visit should be done before the holiday (Yalkut Yosef, Chanukah, p. 61).

A Student or Soldier Whose Parents Are Away

A yeshiva student or soldier who normally fulfills the mitzvah through their parents must light candles themselves with a blessing if their parents are away and lighting elsewhere (Halichot Moed, p. 58).

Chanukah is not only about lighting candles, but is a time of gratitude, reflection, and spiritual growth. Through its halachot and customs, we reconnect to the miracle, strengthen our faith, and bring light into our homes and lives.
