The following stories, shared by someone who knew him personally for decades, offer a glimpse into the life and character of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, one of the most influential Torah leaders of recent times.
A First Meeting That Changed Everything
“I was fifteen years old,” the student recalls. “My father was part of the religious council in Holon. Around 1976, several Jewish families who had fled Lebanon settled nearby. They rented a shop and turned it into a synagogue, following the traditions of Aleppo. Prayer, learning, work, and more learning.”
One day, community leaders came to their home in tears. Their synagogue had been violated. Torah scrolls were left on tables, holy books and tefillin were thrown on the floor, and a sign declared the space unauthorized.
They were devastated. “Even in Lebanon, we were never treated this way,” they said.
The student’s father knew there was only one person who could help. He turned to his son and asked, “Do you want to meet Rabbi Ovadia?”
They went together to his home.
When Rabbi Ovadia heard what had happened, he was deeply shaken. He immediately called the mayor of Tel Aviv and demanded a proper solution. He insisted that a permanent synagogue be arranged and that the community be allowed to continue using their space without interference until then.
“No one touches their synagogue again,” he declared firmly.
From that moment, the student’s life changed. Rabbi Ovadia invited him to attend his classes, and over time, he became closely connected to him for decades.
A Life Centered on Torah
Rabbi Ovadia’s dedication to Torah learning was extraordinary.
He studied day and night, sleeping only briefly each day. Every moment was used for learning, teaching, or helping others. Even during busy schedules and public events, his focus never wavered.
Once, after a long evening of engagements, he boarded a flight and urged the pilot to depart quickly so he could return to an ongoing Torah discussion as soon as possible.
Nothing distracted him from learning, and his family carefully protected the time he needed to continue.
What Brought Him True Joy
After returning from a visit to Jewish communities in Mexico, Rabbi Ovadia described one of the happiest days of his life.
He had spent hours teaching Torah across multiple levels in a single building. First to school students, then to younger yeshiva students, then to older students, and finally to scholars in a kollel.
Four hours of continuous teaching brought him deep satisfaction.
For Rabbi Ovadia, true joy was found in sharing Torah with others.
As the rabbi of Tel Aviv, he delivered multiple lessons each day, traveling from place to place to teach and inspire.
Carrying the Weight of Difficult Decisions
Although he ruled on many matters, certain cases affected him deeply.
Issues involving agunot, divorce, and questions of personal status weighed heavily on him. He would sometimes withdraw for days, focusing entirely on finding the right solution.
During the Yom Kippur War, when others hesitated to address complex cases, he took responsibility with great care and emotion.
Even at personal risk to his health, he continued working until he found answers that aligned with halachah and compassion.
Those who worked with him were often amazed by his knowledge and attention to detail in every case.
A Leader Who Took Responsibility
Rabbi Ovadia was deeply sensitive to the struggles of others and often stepped in where others held back.
On one occasion, he mentioned that he needed to travel to Switzerland. This was not simply a trip, but a mission to resolve a serious community dispute.
Although many others could have handled the matter, he felt personally responsible to bring peace and resolution.
This was his approach throughout life. Where there was conflict, pain, or need, he did not turn away.
A Lasting Legacy
These stories reveal more than historical moments. They show a life lived with purpose, responsibility, and care for every individual.
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef’s greatness was not only in his knowledge, but in how he used it. To protect, to guide, and to uplift others.
