(Image: shutterstock)Shirat HaYam — the Song at the Sea — consists of 19 verses and is recited every day during the morning prayer service, near the end of Pesukei DeZimra.
Our sages teach that reciting Shirat HaYam each day with concentration, joy, and vivid imagination of the great miracle of the splitting of the Red Sea is an extraordinary spiritual segulah.
What spiritual benefits does a person gain by reciting Shirat HaYam daily with joy and intention?
1. He Will Merit to Sing It in the World to Come
The Zohar teaches that one who recites Shirat HaYam properly will merit to sing this song in the World to Come.
2. He Will Merit to Praise God During the Days of Mashiach
The Zohar states that such a person will also merit to sing this praise during the era of Mashiach, together with the joy of the Jewish people in their closeness to God.
3. Forgiveness of Sins
The Zohar further teaches that God forgives all the sins of one who recites the song properly.
This idea is also brought in practical Jewish law by the Mishnah Berurah: “One should recite Shirat HaYam with joy and imagine as though he himself crossed the sea that very day. One who says it with joy is forgiven for his sins.”
4. Protection From Suffering
The Zohar teaches that God protects such a person from troubles and suffering that come into the world.
5. Defeating Spiritual Enemies
The kabbalistic work Shemesh U’Magen, explains that reciting Shirat HaYam weakens forces of impurity and strengthens holiness, while causing one’s enemies to be driven away.
6. A Powerful Protection During Difficult Times
The same work describes Shirat HaYam as an especially powerful protection during times of danger and distress.
7. One of the Great Spiritual Remedies for Sin
The kabbalistic work Tziporen Shamir lists Shirat HaYam among ten spiritual practices that atone for sins without requiring physical suffering or harsh ascetic practices.
The Explanation of the Sefer HaCharedim
The Sefer HaCharedim explains the spiritual power of reciting Shirat HaYam joyfully.
It compares spiritual healing to physical medicine.
Just as there are difficult medical treatments involving pain and expense, there are also “special remedies” that heal gently and effectively. Similarly, spiritual repair can sometimes come through fasting and physical hardship — but there are also spiritual “segulot” through which sins are forgiven without suffering.
One of those special spiritual remedies, the Sefer HaCharedim explains, is reciting Shirat HaYam with joy, imagining oneself personally leaving Egypt and crossing the sea.
The Midrash teaches on the verse “And Moses caused them to journey onward” that the Jewish people were “moved away from their sins,” because anyone who experiences a miracle and sings praise to God is forgiven for his sins.
How Does One Merit These Spiritual Benefits?
The article explains three important conditions:
1. Recite It Every Day
Shirat HaYam should be said daily during prayer.
2. Recite It With Joy
A person should say it with great happiness, just as the Jewish people sang it after witnessing the miracle of the splitting of the sea and the destruction of the Egyptian army.
3. Recite It With Melody and Emotion
The song should be recited with feeling, melody, and emotional connection to the miracle itself.
