The footage, which spread across social media, drew sharp reactions from voices in the Jewish community as well as many other users, and ultimately led to the driver being removed from the platform.
In the video, the driver is seen avoiding delivery of the order because of the Israeli flag placed outside the house. Later in the footage, she opens the food packaging and eats from it on camera. The video’s release prompted widespread criticism and reignited debate over antisemitism and discrimination on social media.
Following the uproar, DoorDash issued an official response. The company, which holds more than 56% of the global delivery market and also owns Wolt, announced that it had permanently blocked the driver’s account. In its statement, it stressed that this was a “violation of community guidelines” and said it condemns any expression of discrimination by drivers or users on the platform.
At the same time, the company said an internal review found that the incident had been staged, and that there had not actually been a real customer order. Even so, DoorDash made clear that content of this kind does not align with the company’s policies and values.
The driver, identified on social media as Kailyn Dang, said after the video was published that she has been facing serious consequences because of the incident. According to her, she has been receiving death threats and no longer feels safe in her home. She then launched a crowdfunding campaign intended to help pay for a move.
The Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) also responded to the incident. The organization’s CEO, Sacha Roytman, welcomed the company’s decision: “We welcome the swift and decisive response of DoorDash leadership, which makes clear that antisemitism and discrimination have no place in the public or business sphere.”
Roytman continued, saying the incident reflects the scale of the problem on social media: “The very fact that a delivery driver saw fit to create staged content that normalizes racism, theft, and a boycott against those who identify with Israel proves just how much hatred of Jews has become a popular tool on social media. International companies must continue to show absolute zero tolerance toward employees or contractors who use their platform to spread racism.”
