A fan attending a World Cup match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles says security ordered him to remove an Israeli flag, an incident that quickly drew attention online after videos and posts claimed Palestinian flags remained visible inside the stadium.

According to the supporter, security personnel told him they were acting on “orders from above” when they instructed him to remove the flag. Neither FIFA nor SoFi Stadium had publicly commented on the specific allegation as of publication.

The incident gained traction on social media, where critics accused tournament officials and stadium security of applying different standards to Israeli symbols. While the circumstances surrounding the reported removal have not been independently verified in full, the claim emerged amid growing debate over the enforcement of flag and political-symbol policies during the 2026 World Cup.

The reported incident took place during the World Cup match between Iran and New Zealand at SoFi Stadium on June 15. The match became a focal point for anti-regime Iranian activists, Israeli supporters, and pro-Palestinian demonstrators, creating a politically charged atmosphere both inside and outside the venue.

Hebrew media reports from the stadium documented the presence of Israeli flags as well as Palestinian flags among spectators. Walla reported that some anti-regime Iranian supporters were stopped by security over clothing and symbols associated with Iran’s pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag, while others succeeded in bringing the symbol into the stadium.

An Israeli supporter at the match described the reason for attending, saying: “We came to show support for the Persian people who have been with us all the way since October 7 here in Los Angeles.”

The dispute comes against the backdrop of wider controversy over political symbols at World Cup venues. FIFA regulations allow national flags within certain size and safety limits, while political, discriminatory, or offensive displays may be prohibited. SoFi Stadium policies similarly allow security personnel to remove banners, signs, or flags under specific circumstances.

Questions surrounding enforcement have surfaced elsewhere during the tournament. Supporter groups have complained about inconsistent application of rules between venues, while FIFA has also faced disputes over the display of Iran’s pre-revolutionary Lion and Sun flag during matches involving the Iranian national team.

For now, it remains unclear who allegedly ordered the Israeli flag’s removal, whether the decision originated with stadium security or tournament officials, and whether identical standards were applied to all national and political symbols present at the match. Neither FIFA nor SoFi Stadium had issued a public explanation regarding the reported incident by the time of publication.
