This colorful craft is a wonderful way to combine creativity with fine motor skills. Using simple materials, children can create an adorable lion they'll be proud to display on the refrigerator, a bedroom wall, or anywhere they like.
What You'll Need
- Yellow or orange cardstock
- Colored paper in shades of yellow, orange, and brown
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Glue
- Black marker
- Googly eyes (optional)
Step 1: Make the Lion's Face
Draw a large circle on the yellow cardstock and cut it out.
This will become the lion's face.
Step 2: Create the Mane
Have the children place their hand on the colored paper and trace around it several times.
Cut out the handprint shapes.
For a full, colorful mane, make about 15 to 20 handprints using different shades of yellow, orange, and brown.
Step 3: Build the Mane
Glue the handprints around the edge of the circle to create the lion's mane.
For extra dimension, overlap the handprints or arrange them in multiple layers.
Step 4: Add the Face
Draw the lion's eyes, nose, mouth, and whiskers with a black marker.
For a fun finishing touch, use googly eyes instead of drawing them if you have them on hand.
Step 5: Personalize Your Lion
Decorate the mane with stickers, glitter, or colorful designs.
Older children can write their name on the craft or draw a jungle background to complete the scene.
