“Moses and the Levitical priests spoke to all Israel, saying: ‘Pay attention and listen, Israel: This day you have become a people to Hashem, your God.’”
“And you shall listen to the voice of Hashem, your God, and carry out His commandments and statutes that I command you today” (Deuteronomy 27:9–10).
Kedushat Levi cites Rashi’s commentary on the words “This day you have become a people,” explaining that the commandments of the Torah should be “new in your eyes every day.” We should fulfill the mitzvot as though we had been commanded to observe them that very day, rather than experiencing them as something old and familiar that we have simply grown accustomed to.
But Kedushat Levi asks an important question: How can we reach such a level? How can a person experience the Torah and mitzvot with a genuine sense of renewal every single day?
With Every Breath, We Receive New Life
The answer lies in recognizing the constant renewal of life.
Kedushat Levi explains that “with every single breath, you receive new vitality.” If Hashem is continually giving us new life, then in a sense, with every breath we become a new creation.
When a person truly believes this, his relationship with the Torah can also become new. Through this faith, Kedushat Levi teaches, a person can merit experiencing the revelation at Mount Sinai anew each day.
This explains why the following verse says, “And you shall listen to the voice of Hashem, your God.”
Usually, we hear “words of Torah.” We study its teachings, halachot, and ideas. But when a person merits experiencing the revelation at Mount Sinai anew each day, he can hear something even deeper: “the voice of Hashem, your God.” He experiences not only the content of the Torah, but the voice of Hashem speaking through it.
Experiencing Mount Sinai Anew
Kedushat Levi explains:
“‘Moses and the Levitical priests spoke, etc.: This day you have become a people, etc.’ (Deuteronomy 27:9). Rashi explained: Every day, it should be new in your eyes. And through what? Because you believe that with every single breath, you receive new vitality. If so, you are a new creation. Through this faith, you will merit hearing the revelation at Mount Sinai every day.
“And so, since you hear the revelation at Mount Sinai, this is what it means when it says, ‘And you shall listen to the voice of Hashem, your God.’ For without this, you do not hear the voice of Hashem; you hear only words of Torah. But when you merit hearing the revelation at Mount Sinai at every moment, you will merit hearing the very voice of Hashem, your God.”
The message is profound: Renewal in our service of Hashem begins with recognizing that we ourselves are constantly being renewed.
Every breath is another gift of life from Hashem. Every day is therefore a new beginning, and every mitzvah can be approached as though we are receiving it for the first time.
When we live with that awareness, Torah is no longer something merely familiar from yesterday. It becomes alive and new today, allowing us to hear not only its words, but the voice of Hashem within them.
