5 Points to Ponder

The Wonders of Creation and the Unique Destiny of the Jewish People

Reflections on purpose, Torah leadership, and the enduring hand of the Creator

AA

One of the ways to recognize that the world has a Creator — a “Master Designer” — is by observing the wonders of creation. A striking example can be found in the animal kingdom: the Creator gave every creature the exact tools it needs to survive.

For instance, in nature there are predator animals and prey animals. When we look closely at this reality, we notice something fascinating:

1. Predators (like a tiger) have eyes on the front of their face, while prey animals (like a cow) have eyes on the sides of their head.

Prey animals graze with their heads down in the grass and soil. If their eyes were only in front, they would see only what is directly ahead, and would miss danger approaching from the sides.

Because their eyes are positioned on the sides, they have a wide field of vision and can detect predators in time to escape.

Predators, on the other hand, only need to focus forward — on the target they are chasing, and do not need to worry about threats from the sides.

2. Predators have sharp, cutting teeth, while prey animals have flat, grinding teeth.

Predators must tear flesh in order to eat. Prey animals eat grass — so they need grinding teeth.

3. Prey animals often have upright or mobile ears (like rabbits, deer, and gazelles).

They require greater environmental awareness, and their ear movement helps them detect and locate sounds.

Can this precise system be the result of “chance”? How did predators “know” to develop sharp fangs, and prey animals to develop grinding teeth?

God designed this astonishing division — giving each animal exactly the tools it needs?

The King and the Architect (A Parable)

A king wants to build a magnificent palace. He hires a contractor and tells him: “Build the palace according to the instructions of my architect. Whatever he tells you — consider it as if I myself commanded it.”

The contractor follows every instruction carefully, knowing that the architect was appointed by the king — and acting against him would mean answering directly to the king.

God appointed the great sages of each generation to guide and instruct the Jewish people.

Some people belittle or mock the words of Torah leaders — whether great rabbis, local rabbinic authorities, or community spiritual leaders.

However, the Torah explicitly commands: “You shall come to the priests and the judge who will be in those days… and you shall do according to everything they instruct you… Do not stray right or left from what they tell you.” (Devarim 17:9–11)

A Chosen Nation

A friend once read an article describing the Jewish people as “a chosen nation” — a term expressing Israel’s unique role and holiness as God’s people.

He argued that there is no real difference between Jews and other nations — and that saying we are “chosen” is arrogant or discriminatory.

I responded that we truly are a unique nation — and the Divine providence over us can be clearly seen.

Consider these astonishing facts:

1. We are less than 0.5% of the world — yet constantly in the world spotlight.

No other tiny nation is discussed, criticized, and targeted so intensively.

2. We are surrounded by nations openly hostile to us — yet continue to survive.

Hundreds of millions of enemies surround a tiny country — yet do not wipe it out.

3. Those who seek to destroy us often end up working for us — even building our land.

This defies logic.

4. The Jewish people received one of the most strategic and valuable pieces of land in the world.

How is such a treasure granted to a persecuted, exiled nation?

5. Despite endless persecution and exile — the Jewish nation has never disappeared.

Every other ancient nation vanished, but Israel remains.
