Can a pergola serve as a kosher sukkah?
A pergola built in the house courtyard can serve as a sukkah, however there are several requirements that must be met. Therefore, anyone who wants to use a pergola as a sukkah should consult with a Torah scholar [Responsa of the Rishon LeZion section 54].
Is it permissible to build a sukkah in a public domain?
It is permissible to set up a sukkah in a public domain, provided that one is careful not to block the pathway [Yalkut Yosef section 637].
