A healthy breakfast plays an important role in our daily functioning, and many nutrition experts agree that it provides the energy the body needs and contributes significantly to overall health.

If you’re among those who rush out with only a cup of coffee — whether because you’re late, dieting, or simply don’t feel like eating, the following points are worth being aware of.

1. Breakfast Helps Prevent Gallbladder-Related Illnesses

The Talmud teaches that eating breakfast protects a person from many illnesses.

In Tractate Bava Metzia (107b) it states: “Eighty-three illnesses depend on the gall (bile), and all of them are prevented by morning bread with a bit of salt and a jug of water.”

Eating morning bread (a simple morning meal) is associated with protection from numerous ailments.

2. Breakfast Strengthens the Body

Breakfast usually comes after a fast of about 12 hours and helps prevent physical weakness — which is why it is especially important before a school or work day.

It also:

  • Strengthens the body

  • Helps prevent weight gain

  • Improves mood

  • Supports muscle and bone building

During sleep, the body does not receive nutrients, which may trigger processes of bone breakdown. Eating in the morning helps stop this process and supports rebuilding.

3. Breakfast Helps Prevent Weight Gain

A morning meal jump-starts metabolism and helps balance blood glucose levels. Keeping structured eating times — morning, midday, and evening — can:

  • Reduce overeating

  • Prevent frequent snacking

  • Support healthier eating patterns

Maimonides (the Rambam) expressed it this way: “Eat in the morning like a king, at midday like a prince, and in the evening like a pauper.”

4. Breakfast Improves Thinking, Focus, and Concentration

The Sages also noted the cognitive benefits of morning bread. They taught that one who eats breakfast: “Has a settled mind and succeeds in judgment.”

A person who eats in the morning has clearer thinking and better ability to respond thoughtfully.

5. Breakfast Helps Prevent Bad Breath

A morning meal supports proper digestion and metabolism, helping the body release waste products through urine and stool.

Because of this, regular breakfast consumption may also help reduce unpleasant body or mouth odor.
