Can the Father of the Boy Be the Sandek?
Question
Hello,
Is it permitted and customary for the father of the baby to serve as the sandek at the bris?
Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
It is permissible for the father of the boy to be the sandek at the bris, and some have written that it is even commendable for him to do so.
Sources: This is indeed stated by the Pele Yoez (entry Milah) and it is good for the father if he can be the sandek, as he is like an altar to offer his son as an offering and he will be accepted for atonement for him. Furthermore, in the responsa of Rabbi Meir Simcha of Dvinsk, Volume 4 (Section 86, s.v. “at least”), it is written that it is proper to practice that the father of the boy should be the sandek, etc. See also in the responsa of Rabbi Aharon of Shmuel (Volume 6, Section 165).
With blessings,
Hillel Meirs.
