Washing Meat and Milk Utensils in the Same Dishwasher
Question
Is it permissible to place both meat and milk utensils in the dishwasher together for washing? If possible, please provide the halacha according to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l. Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
According to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef zt"l, if one is careful not to place utensils with large food remnants in the dishwasher, and there is only dirt and grease from the plates and spoons, it is permissible to use the dishwasher for both milk and meat utensils, one after the other, even within the same day.
However, if one does not keep this precaution and places utensils with large food remnants, such as big pieces of meat or pizza, it is difficult to be lenient [as these pieces may not be affected by the cleaning agents mixed with the water, and there is no issue of taste being transferred in a permissive manner].
According to the principle of halacha, there is room to be lenient in washing meat and milk utensils together, but it is better, whenever possible, to wash meat utensils separately from milk utensils, one after the other. In hotels and public restaurants where it is difficult to maintain this separation, they should ensure that they have two dishwashers, one for meat and one for milk (Shut Yabia Omer, Volume 10, Yoreh De'ah, Section 4, and Yalkut Yosef, Prohibitions and Permissibility, Section 480, Paragraph 46).
