Halachot and Customs
Haircuts on the Eve of Shabbat and Festivals
Question
Hello, honored Rabbi, according to the customs of Sephardim, until when is it permitted to get a haircut on the eve of Shabbat, and until when on the eve of a festival? There is a distinction between getting a haircut by a barber or by oneself, correct? What about a haircut given at home by a mother? Thank you very much and Shabbat Shalom.
Answer
Hello and blessings
Here are the words of Yalkut Yosef
It is proper to get a haircut on Friday in honor of Shabbat, and it is permissible to get a haircut even after midday, whether by a Jewish barber or for a fee, and there is no prohibition to get a haircut then, also according to the mystical teachings, contrary to what some later authorities have thought. For the restriction to rest is only for the time of the afternoon prayer, and those who rely on the leniencies stated in this matter may also get a haircut after midday. It is not necessary to be strict in this even out of piety. And this is the custom. [Yalkut Yosef Shabbat Vol. 1, p. 186, and p. 596].
