Question

Is it permissible for a mourner to recite Taḥanun in the afternoon prayers? Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

One does not recite Taḥanun in the house of mourning for the entire week of shiva. However, when the mourner prays in a synagogue or another location, the congregation is not obliged to follow him, and they do recite Taḥanun, yet the mourner himself should not recite it.

Sources: Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 141:4) and Mishnah Berurah (s.k. 12).

Wishing you good tidings,

Hillel Meirs
