In Which Direction Should One Pray?

AA

Question

If I am at home and do not have time to go to pray at the synagogue, I do not know in which direction I should pray. If you can help me, I would appreciate it.

Answer

Greetings and blessings,

All over the world, one should direct their prayers of the *Shemonah Esrei* prayer towards Jerusalem, as it is written, "and they shall pray to You through their land." In the central region of the country - Gush Dan and the surrounding area, one should pray towards the east - the direction from which the sun rises. In areas that are east of Jerusalem, such as Jericho and similar places, one should pray towards the west, where the sun sets. In the north of the country, one should pray to the south, while in the south of the country, one should pray to the north.

I once heard a wonderful way to determine where south and east are, etc. One looks at the roofs of houses at the *solar heaters*, which are always installed facing south (where there is maximum sun exposure), and based on knowing where south is, you can determine the other directions yourself. There are also special prayer guides [published by Beit Tefillah - Miller] that have a kind of compass on the cover, indicating where to direct your prayers anywhere in the world, so that we pray towards Jerusalem.

Good luck - Menashe Israel
