Eating Meat During the Nine Days When Tisha B'Av Falls on Sunday

AA

Question

Is there still a prohibition on eating meat for Sephardim even though Tisha B'Av falls on Sunday? Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

For Sephardic custom, the prohibition against eating meat begins from Rosh Chodesh Av, not only during the week in which Tisha B'Av falls. However, according to the custom of Sephardim in Israel, it is permitted to eat meat on Rosh Chodesh itself (Chazon Ovadia, Four Fast Days, page 169).

Additionally, it is permitted and a mitzvah to eat meat on the Shabbat within the Nine Days, even on the eve of Tisha B'Av that falls on Shabbat (as it does this year), or on Tisha B'Av that falls on Shabbat and is postponed to Sunday, and one should not be strict in this matter (see Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 551:10, and Mishna Berura there, note 23, and 552:59).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
