The Order of the Lulav Shaking for Eastern Communities

AA

Question

Hello esteemed Rabbi, according to the customs of Eastern communities, what is the order of shaking the lulav? In which places in Hallel do we shake it?

Answer

Greetings, the custom of Eastern communities regarding the order of the shaking is: south, north, east, up, down, west. We shake during the taking of the lulav. Then, in Hallel, when reciting the verse "Give thanks to Hashem for He is good," and when repeating the verse "Please, Hashem, save now" twice. Finally, during the verse "Give thanks to Hashem for He is good" once, even in places where it is customary to repeat it (Chazon Ovadia, Sukkot, pages 57-58). Blessings, Hillel Meirs.
