Is Buying a New Knife on Erev Rosh Hashanah a Sign for Prosperity?
Question
With G-d's help, hello esteemed Rabbi, buying a new knife on Rosh Hashanah as a sign for good livelihood—how is this supposed to work exactly? There are various versions: must the knife be serrated or not? Should it be bought specifically on the eve of Rosh Hashanah? Do we need to hide it until the next Rosh Hashanah, if G-d wills, or can it be used starting from the current Rosh Hashanah? Should it be a bread knife or a knife for any purpose? Thank you very much.
Answer
Greetings,
In the book Segulot Yisrael (Section of Letter D), it is brought in the name of the holy Gaon Rabbi Meir of Zbitzhov, of blessed memory, that everyone should buy a new knife on the eve of Rosh Hashanah and sharpen it, as it is a sign for prosperity for the entire year.
Likewise, it is mentioned in the book Zichron Tov (Regarding Innovations of His Torah, Letter 14) that the holy Gaon Rabbi Yitzhak of Naskhiz, of blessed memory, said that the Lubliner (the Chozeh of Lublin), of righteous memory, would distribute knives on Rosh Hashanah to those close to him as a sign for prosperity, as it is written, "Cuts of life for all the living," etc. Refer there.
Blessings,
Hillel Meirs
