Timing of Shofar Blowing at the End of Yom Kippur

AA

Question

When is the time to blow the shofar at the end of Yom Kippur? I know that the correct time is at nightfall, but is there a complete prohibition to blow during twilight? I saw an explanation that it is permitted, and only if it falls on Shabbat is it forbidden. Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

According to the main halacha, it is permissible to blow the shofar during twilight at the conclusion of Yom Kippur, even if it falls on Shabbat, since this involves a prohibition of rabbinical origin for the sake of a mitzvah (Mishnah Berurah 620:12). However, the Chazon Ovadia on the High Holy Days (page 570) writes that nevertheless, since there are some individuals who will immediately proceed to eat after hearing the blasts, it is advisable to blow only after nightfall, which is twenty minutes after sunset, as then, according to the opinion of the Geonim, they can eat.
