Purchasing Clothes During Chol Hamoed Sukkot
Question
Is it permitted to buy clothes during Chol Hamoed Sukkot? Thank you
Answer
Holidays are for joy,
1. It is permitted to buy new clothes during Chol Hamoed - if they are for use during the holiday (see Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim 544:3, and 545:11).
Nevertheless, one should strive to purchase clothes before the holiday that do not appear to be for the holiday (Shmirat Shabbat Kehilchatah part 2 chapter 67, section 26. See also Hazon Ovadia Yom Tov page 465, section 30).
2. One should not buy clothes during Chol Hamoed that are not for the holiday. However, if the clothes are being sold at a discount and there is a possibility that they will not be available at such a low price after Chol Hamoed, it is permitted (Rav Moshe Feinstein zt”l, as cited in the memorial book Miksha Torah part 2, section 134).
