Lunar Eclipse
Question
I have already asked this question and you did not respond: Is a lunar eclipse mentioned in the Bible?
Answer
Hello!
This is a good question;
The answer is affirmative: Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Sukkah 2 - the one who sleeps under the bed: Our Rabbis taught: When the sun is eclipsed - it is a bad sign for the entire world. To what is this similar? To a flesh-and-blood king who made a feast for his servants and placed a lamp before them, became angry with them, and said to his servant: Take the lamp away from them and leave them in darkness.
It is taught, Rabbi Meir says: As long as the luminaries are eclipsed - it is a bad sign for the enemies of Israel, because they are used to being punished. It is like a teacher who comes to school with a strap in his hand, who is worried? The one who is accustomed to being beaten every day worries.
Our Rabbis taught: When the sun is eclipsed - it is a bad sign for idolaters, when the moon is eclipsed - it is a bad sign for the enemies of Israel, because Israel counts by the moon and idolaters by the sun. Eclipsed in the east - it is a bad sign for those who dwell in the east, in the west - it is a bad sign for those who dwell in the west, in the middle of the sky - it is a bad sign for the entire world. If its face resembles blood - a sword has come to the world, if it resembles sackcloth - arrows of famine come to the world, if it resembles both - a sword and arrows of famine come to the world. If it is eclipsed upon entering - misfortune is delayed, upon exiting - it hastens to come. And some say the opposite. And there is no nation that suffers an eclipse without their god suffering with them, as it is stated +Exodus 12+ and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments. And in a time when Israel does the will of the Omnipresent, they need not fear any of these, as it is stated +Jeremiah 10+ Thus says Hashem: Do not learn the way of the nations and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the nations are dismayed at them, the nations are dismayed, but Israel is not dismayed.
Our Rabbis taught: For four things the sun is eclipsed: for the death of a chief justice that was not eulogized properly, for a betrothed maiden who cried out in the city and no one came to her aid, for homosexuality, and for two brothers whose blood was spilled together.
And for four things the luminaries are eclipsed: for those who write (false testimony) +the Masoretic tradition of the Shas: [false testimony]+ and for those who make false testimony, and for those who raise small cattle in the land of Israel, and for those who cut down good trees, etc.
Thus, a lunar eclipse is mentioned in the Bible by the name of 'signs of heaven'.
