Halachot and Customs

Is it permissible for a mourner to eat meat during the thirty days of mourning?

AA

Question

Hello Rabbi,

I wanted to know whether Halacha or the custom among Ashkenazim prohibits the eating of meat during the thirty days of mourning (after the first seven days of mourning - the shiva)?

Answer

Hello,

Only an onan (the mourner during the period between the death and the burial) is prohibited from eating meat; however, a mourner is permitted to eat meat, even during the first seven days of mourning.

Sources: Shulchan Aruch Yoreh De’ah (Siman 348, Seif 1, and Siman 376, Seif 8).

Best wishes,

Hillel Meirs
