Is it Permissible to Play Monopoly on Shabbat?

AA

Question

Greetings honorable Rabbi, I would like to ask if it is permissible to play Monopoly on Shabbat? And if it is permitted, until what age is it allowed to play? Thank you

Answer

Greetings,

It is permissible to play Monopoly on Shabbat (see responsa Be'er Moshe, part 6, section 100; Or Litzion, part 2, page 8, s.v. and indeed; and Shemirat Shabbat Ke-Hilchata, part 1, chapter 16, section 33, and note 95).

According to the custom of the Sephardim, one can be lenient until the age of Bar Mitzvah.

According to the custom of the Ashkenazim, it is fundamentally permissible even after Bar Mitzvah (see Shemirat Shabbat Ke-Hilchata, part 1, chapter 16, section 35), and nevertheless, it is certainly preferable to avoid it, for Shabbat, the delight of the days, was given for spiritual joy, a joy akin to the world to come, and anyone who honors it by refraining from their usual activities - will be granted an inheritance without measure (see there, section 1).

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
