Does a Baking Tray That Has Parchment Paper on It Require Immersion?

AA

Question

Hello, esteemed rabbi,

1. Do I need to immerse the baking trays (that come with the oven)? Or since I put parchment paper on them, is it unnecessary?

2. What should be done if a bit of food touched the tray? Should I throw it away?

3. And if I need to immerse it, but I haven't done so until now - what should I do?

Thank you very much!

Answer

Greetings,

1. If the trays are manufactured by a company owned by non-Jews, they should be immersed with a blessing, even if food is always placed on parchment paper (responsa Minchat Shlomo, part 2, siman 66, section 5).

2. Although it is forbidden to use a non-immersed utensil for eating and drinking, food that was placed in or touched by it is not prohibited for consumption (Rema, Yoreh De'ah, end of siman 116).

3. The trays should be thoroughly cleaned of any dirt or food remnants and immersed in a mikvah for utensils.

Blessings,

Hillel Meirs
