Question

What fruit did Adam and Chava eat from the Tree of Knowledge? It is not mentioned anywhere what the fruit was. Thank you.

Answer

Greetings,

There are several opinions on this matter - as appears in Masechet Berachot (page 40, end of column 1). Rabbi Meir says it was a grapevine, since there is nothing that brings lamentation (and this brought death. Rashi) upon man like wine, as it is said (Genesis 9:21) "and he drank from the wine and became intoxicated." Rabbi Nechemiah says it was a fig, based on the notion that something in which they stumbled can be the means for their repair, as it is said (Genesis 3:7) "and they sewed together fig leaves." Rabbi Yehuda says it was wheat, as a child does not know how to say 'Aba' and 'Ima' (and this is called the Tree of Knowledge. Rashi) until he tastes the flavor of grain.

And in the Midrash Bereishit Rabbah (section 15, paragraph 7), Rabbi Abba from Akko holds that it was an etrog, for it is written (Genesis 3:6) "and the woman saw that the tree was good," and there is no tree whose wood is eaten like its fruit except for the etrog.

Best regards,

Hillel Meirs
